The Assam University Silchar finally has an elected Student Union after three years now. Subhamoy Chanda became the President and Arunabha Dutta the General Secretary. The elections for the Student Union were held today for eight of the posts of the union where five remained uncontested.

Both the President and General Secretary posts were uncontested. Kisamlungbe Pame won the post of Vice-President with a heavy margin of 72.08 per cent votes. Brajanandan Gupta became the Assistant General Secretary in the open category defeating Subhasish Choudhury just by 254 votes.

Srinjana Mitra became the uncontested Assistant General Secretary in the female category. Rohit Rishi and Nabakishor Akura became the uncontested Cultural Secretary and Sports Secretary respectively. Hijam Bijeta Singha became the Magazine Secretary with 40.90 per cent votes.

Out of eight posts, only two are being held by female candidates, while one post was reserved for women. Even though most of the posts had just one candidate, the post of magazine secretary had three candidates and the highest number of votes cast. The Student Union of Assam University holds an important position not just within the university but for higher education in the entire valley. Popularly this election is called the stepping stone for the political journey of many.
