Assam – Mizoram border: Bomb blast at a School in Hailakandi; “Mobilised force to ascertain facts,” SP

On the eve of India’s Independence day, one more school operated by the Government of Assam has been bombed at Assam – Mizoram border. The incident took place in Hailakandi’s Gutguti area. According to the available information, last night, the locals heard the sound of an explosion. When they went to verify the source of the sound, they found Pakua Punjee LP School in Sahabmara has been partially damaged.

“The school is located deep in the interior of Ramnathpur’s Gutguti. We have got the information and now, we are on our way to visit the school. From the ferry, we will have to sail on a boat to reach the school,” said Nodal Teacher of the School Ujjwal Nath. The Bengali Medium School is empanelled under Sarba Siksha Abhijan, Assam and it was evaluated during Guno Utsav under DISE Code 18230215202.

“We have got the information that a blast has occurred at a school within 500 metres inside the Assam – Mizoram border. After we have got the information from the local villagers, we mobilised forces. It is a shadow area with limited or no network connectivity and that is why I am yet to be briefed about the actual situation,” said Gaurav Upadhyay, SP Hailakandi.

The school is shut due to COVID measures and at night, there was no one around it. So, as per the locals, the blast did not cause any injuries. “We feel the Mizos are doing this intentionally to terrorise the people living in the bordering areas. This is their way of threatening parents and guardians who would send their children to the Independence Day event tomorrow,” said a local teacher.

This is not the first time a school has been bombed within the territory of Assam. Earlier this year, miscreants allegedly from Mizoram’s side of the border carried out dual blasts damaging Muliwala Lower Primary School located under Katlicherra Block, around 12-kilometres from Ramnathpur Police Station in Hailakandi.

Before that, 990 Dholakhal LP School and Upper Painom LP School in Cachar district’s bordering areas were bombed. Former DIG, South Assam Range, Dilip Kumar Dey had said that the blasts are acts of terrorism and must be investigated as per law. The DGP of Assam went on to add that State will press for NIA’s intervention. However, no investigation has been carried out and not a single individual has been arrested.

Miscreants from a different state are entering Assam time and again and bombing schools with little or no resistance. It remains a surprise as the Assam Police is yet to secure any arrests in the repeated act of terrorism.
