Assam University Holds 21st Convocation Today, Confers 202 PhDs, 70 Gold Medals

Assam University, Silchar, celebrated its 21st Convocation Ceremony today, marking a significant academic milestone. The event saw the conferral of honorary PhD degrees to three distinguished personalities: senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha, former President of Assam Sahitya Sabha Rongbong Terang, and renowned scholar Diganta Vishwasarma.

In addition to the honorary PhDs, the university awarded 202 students with doctoral degrees, while 70 meritorious students were recognised with gold medals for their academic excellence.

The ceremony was graced by Dr Nilima Dutta, Vice-Chancellor of Dr Harisingh Gour University, Madhya Pradesh, who served as the Chief Guest. Air Chief Marshal (Retd.) Arup Raha, Chancellor of Assam University, and Vice-Chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant were also present, along with other esteemed dignitaries.

This convocation celebrated the academic achievements of students and recognised the contributions of individuals who have made a lasting impact in various fields.

Meanwhile, students have taken to social media to express their disappointment over the convocation attire. Not long ago, Assam University used the traditional black gown as their convocation attire, but in an attempt to stay connected to Indian tradition and culture, the university decided to switch to a more ethnic outfit. Since this change, students have been criticizing the new attire for such an important academic event. This year’s outfit has faced similar backlash, with many students complaining that, considering the amount of money charged for the event, they expected something more formal and prestigious.

A memefest has since taken over social media, with students comparing this year’s outfit to wedding attire often worn by musicians who perform at traditional Indian ceremonies. Some memes even drew comparisons to a scene from the popular film 3 Idiots, where the lead characters wear pagdis resembling those distributed at Assam University’s convocation.

Despite these critiques, the ceremony itself remained a significant occasion, celebrating academic excellence and the achievements of the students. While the attire may have sparked discontent, the event successfully honoured the hard work and dedication of those who crossed this academic milestone, making it a day to remember for both graduates and the university.
