Barak Valley organisations condemn YMA’s Targeting of Non-Mizo Traders, Call for Central Government Action

The Young Mizo Association (YMA) has ordered non-Mizo businessmen to leave Aizawl from May 15. The YMA has issued such selective notices to non- Mizo traders. The radical Mizo organisation has already forcibly closed down 91 non-Mizo businesses in Aizawl. As a result, non-Mizos are fleeing Mizoram in fear which has angered many organisations of Barak Valley. They have condemned the activities of YMA and demanded immediate intervention of Central Government.

Yesterday a meeting was organised in Silchar regarding the atrocities of non-Mizos in Mizoram. Many organisations of Barak Valley attended the meeting. The meeting was attended by various speakers who condemned the attack on Mizos in Mizoram and demanded that the Young Mizo Association (YMA) should be declared a terrorist organisation and be banned.

It was also resolved in the meeting to surround the Mizoram House in Silchar on July 1 for protesting against the atrocities on non-Mizos in Mizoram.

Speaking to reporters, Sadhan Purkayastha said, “Democracy loving people of Barak Valley are observing since the last few days that a non-government organisation named Young Mizo Association is forcibly closing down shops of non-Mizos in Mizoram. In this situation, the Government of Mizoram is playing the role of a mute spectator. The Central Government is also not taking any action in this regard hence we convened a meeting in Silchar today with democracy loving people.”

He added, “It has been resolved in the meeting that we will submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Mizoram on July 1 through the liason officer of Mizoram House located in Silchar. At the same time we will also sit on a peaceful dharna infront of Mizoram house on July 1 from 11 am to 1 pm demanding restoration of peace in Mizoram.”
