Cachar SP Launches “Anti-Romeo Squad” in Silchar to Ensure Women’s Safety During Durga Puja
In a proactive measure to safeguard women and children during the festive days of Durga Puja, Cachar Police has once again introduced the “Anti-Romeo Squad” in Silchar. Starting today (October 7), the squad, trained in unarmed combat and patrolling the town on bikes, will be on duty 24/7. Their mission is to prevent any incidents of harassment or crimes against women during one of Assam’s largest gatherings.
Clad in black uniforms, the squad consists mainly of women police officers who have undergone rigorous training over the last 15 days. Their launch was officially announced by Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, earlier today. Speaking at a media briefing, SP Mahatta emphasised the need for such a unit during the Durga Puja festivities, when large crowds often pose a risk to women and children.
SP Mahatta remarked, “Durga Puja is celebrated in Silchar with full fervour and show. The crowd during this time is huge, and managing it is a task. Unfortunately, this crowd can sometimes result in instances of eve-teasing and inappropriate behaviour towards women. Our Anti-Romeo Squad, equipped with unarmed combat skills, will be on patrol day and night to ensure women’s safety. Along with the BSF, they will respond instantly to any reports of harassment, aiming to provide justice and prevent untoward incidents.”
“Whenever they will get any such news of eve teasing or untoward activities or crimes against women, they will reach the spot instantly and we will try to provide justice to the distressed”, he further added.
Speaking about last year’s outcome of this squad, the SP said, “We had this squad during the last puja as well and the people of Silchar really appreciated the initiative for which reason we are continuing this year too. They have been successful in their mission”.
The squad will remain active until Dashami (the last day of Durga Puja), with the goal of maintaining a safe environment for women and children during the festivities.
