DC Keerthi Jalli ties rakhi to cleaners; says, “They’ve been our biggest protective forces in the fight against Corona”

Raksha Bandhan or as locally known, Rakhi Purnima this year, has remained a subdued celebration due to the ongoing coronavirus-led pandemic. Additionally, the communal clash last evening in Malugram has left the entire city tensed and worried.

Amidst all this, the deputy commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli, whose own parents are battling COVID19 infection back in Hyderabad, made the day special for many ‘safai karmacharis’ (cleaners).

DC Jalli decided to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with the cleaners by tying rakhi on their wrists. She along with other officials from district administration visited Silchar Civil Hospital and tied rakhi on the wrists of the Safai Karmacharis there.

“Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with a promise of protection by brother while sister prays for brothers’ well being. Cleaners have been our biggest protective forces in the fight against Corona,” said DC Jalli.

Talking about her decision to celebrate the day with the cleaners, Jalli said, “I wanted to thank these faceless brothers and sisters who are silently taking care of us.” The DC added that she prays for their health and well being.

The cleaners, because of the nature of their job and close proximity with the COVID positive patients, often face issue in their neighbourhood. “Despite the social stigma attached and fear of being infected, the safai karmis have extended yeoman service to the corona patients, which is unparalleled and exemplary,” asserted Jalli.

Rongmai, one of the cleaners, narrated how before joining the job, he was very scared, as some of the workers then had tested positive for corona. But, he shared how all his fears evaporated once he was on the job. “We realised what we are doing is for the greater and noble cause of the suffering humanity,” said Rongmai.

He went on to add, “When patients come for admission, they come befuddled and confused and in the grip of fear. We try to make them comfortable while they stay. When they get discharged, they return with smiles on their faces. Seeing their happiness large on their faces gives us immense satisfaction.”

Joint Director of Health Services, Dr. SJ Das, i/c SM Dev Civil Hospital, Dr. Jiten Singh Hazari, Nodal Officer, Dr. Rajat Deb, DPM, Rahul Ghose,  DME, Suman Choudhury, Hospital Administrator, Hasina Ferdose and others were also present on the momentous occasion.
