Himanta Biswa Sarma announces summer vacation in schools till May 31, college admission to go online

Assam Government has declared Summer vacation in schools across the state from 1st May to 31st May, education minister Himanta Biswa Sharma announced on Thursday. The minister also sought suggestions from educational experts on changing the academic year from current Jan-Dec to April-March.

“For this year if we end the academic year on 31st March then the students may not need to face loss due to the Corona Pandemic. But we don’t want to take unilateral decision on educational issues and asking for valuable suggestions from academic experts” the minister said.

The minister also informed that SEBA and Council will declare their respective results by mid-June. The minister said, for this time, the students will not get mark sheet immediately after the result and digital mark sheet will be issued, through which students can apply for admissions in different colleges.

The minister said that many class 12 promoted students are unable to get books due to closure of schools amid lockdown. To facilitate them, schools will disburse books to the students from 26th May to 28th May, maintaining proper social distancing norms.

The minister asked students to download the Diksha App and avail benefit of online education.

Giving a relaxation for the research scholars, minister informed that the government has allowed the scholars to go to their respective college/university laboratories for continuing their research work.

To keep students engaged during the lockdown period, the education department will soon start a competition. “We have decided to start a competition among school students over poems, stories and essay. Students will be given topic and they have to write on it. Teachers will collect them from students and after the Pandemic gets over, we will reward around 10,000 students. The topics will be soon aired through television and newspapers ads” minister added.
