‘Janta Curfew’: Silchar-Guwahati, Silchar – Dharmanagar and all other passenger trains cancelled

With no sign of redress of Corona cases in India, the tally of which plunged above 250 on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for nationwide 14-hour shutdown “Janta Curfew” on Sunday, hoping the call will break the chain of the fatal virus.

All the states/UTs have been asked by the centre to sensitize the masses on the need for mandatory social distancing and self-imposed quarantine to prevent community-level transmission of the virus.

Observing the ‘Janta Curfew’, Indian railways has cancelled all the passenger trains from midnight of March 21/22 to 10 pm of the same day. “All passenger train services originating between midnight of 21/22 March 2020 to 10:00 PM of 22 March 2020 (nearly 2,400 train services) shall not be run. However, the passenger train services already on run at 7:00 AM on the day will be allowed to run to the destinations. The railway divisions should keep a watch and trains which are empty can be short terminated if required,” stated a release from Railway board meeting on 20.02.20, said.

“In view of uprising COVID-19 coronavirus threat and Janata Curfew on 22.03.20, it has been decided to cancel all the passenger trains originating from the divisions on 22.03.2020,” an internal order is written to all the division heads of NF Railway mentioned.

Indian Railways has also taken steps to discourage senior citizens from undertaking non-essential journey by removing special incentives which presently exist for their train travel. Indian Railways has done this by withdrawing concessional booking of tickets to senior citizens for Unreserved & Reserved segment w.e.f. 00:00 hrs of 20th March till further advisory. Refund Rules for PRS counter generated tickets are also relaxed in view of Corona Outbreak.
