LoP Leads Relief Efforts for Manipur Refugees, Urges Prime Minister’s Intervention

Under the directive of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Bora, along with the Cachar District Congress team, distributed essential food supplies to Manipur refugees at the Fulertal relief camp in Cachar. This initiative followed Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the area, where he assessed the conditions of the displaced individuals and listened to their concerns. Later in a meeting, he addressed the press and urged the Prime Minister to take some time out of his schedule to talk with the people of Manipur and understand their situation.

During his visit, Rahul Gandhi met with the refugees, who shared their hardships, particularly the challenges in accessing food and medical care. Deeply moved by their plight, Rahul Gandhi immediately instructed the District Congress to provide necessary assistance. Acting on these instructions, Bhupen Bora and his team distributed a month’s worth of food supplies and offered financial aid for medical treatment.

Bhupen Bora informed the media that during Rahul Gandhi’s visit, he met with the refugees from Manipur who had taken shelter in Cachar and listened to their grievances. The refugees expressed their struggles, particularly regarding food and medical care, and conveyed their desire to return home and for peace to be restored in their state. Bora emphasized that the refugees had received no government aid, leading to severe difficulties, with some even requiring hospitalization. Following Rahul Gandhi’s immediate instructions, Bora assured that the Congress party would now closely monitor the situation, provide essential commodities, and coordinate with the District Congress Committee and local MLA to offer the necessary support.

It should be noted that a day earlier, Bora criticized the ruling government for its failure to address the crisis effectively, stating, “Ruling Government Failed so RaGa Stepped In.”

In a social media post after visiting Silchar, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the severe impact of the floods in Assam and the government’s inadequate response. He expressed his condolences to the affected families and called for comprehensive measures to manage and prevent such disasters in the future.

After meeting with the affected people in the relief camp in Cachar and later in Manipur, the Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, addressed the press. He emphasized that this marks his third visit since the conflict began, highlighting his deep concern for the affected individuals.

“This is the third time I have come here since the problem started, and it has been a tremendous tragedy. Frankly, I was expecting some improvement in the situation, but I was disappointed to see that the situation is nowhere near what it should be,” Gandhi said. He stressed the urgent need for peace, noting, “Violence is hurting everybody, and I have never seen anything like this in India. It is completely split in two and a tragedy for everyone involved.”

Rahul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the people of Manipur, stating, “I want to tell all the people of Manipur that I come here as your brother, someone who wants to help you and work with you to bring back peace in Manipur. I am ready to do whatever I can, and the Congress party is ready to do whatever it can to bring back peace here.”

He pledged his continuous support, asserting, “Anytime you want me to come here, whether it be 5 times or 10 times, any number of times you need me, I am happy to come and listen to whatever you have to say and try to help you as Leader of the Opposition.”

Addressing the lack of attention from the central government, Gandhi remarked, “Manipur is a proud state of the Indian Union, and even without this tragedy, the Prime Minister should have come to Manipur. In this huge tragedy, I request the Prime Minister to take one or two days of his time and just listen to the people of Manipur. It will comfort them, and we, as the Congress party, are ready to support anything that would improve the situation here.”

Rahul Gandhi’s subsequent visits underscore his commitment to addressing the crisis in Manipur and his call for a unified effort to restore peace and stability in the region.
