Memorandum Submitted in Silchar: Urges PM Modi for Humanitarian Aid and Shelter Persecuted Hindus from Bangladesh

Representatives from various cultural and social organizations in Silchar, along with several unions and associations, have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The memorandum, delivered through the Cachar District Commissioner, seeks urgent intervention to ensure the safety and security of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

The appeal underscores the severe plight of Hindus in Bangladesh, stating, “The Hindu community in Bangladesh is being attacked, killed, molested, raped, and their properties, deities, and Mandirs are being set on fire, vandalized, and ransacked by Islamist radical forces mercilessly.” The violence has escalated following student protests and Vijay Utsav celebrations since August 5, 2024.

The letter also references the shocking desecration of historical figures. The letter read, “They have left no stone unturned to vandalize the busts and statues of their father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and our all-time great poet Rabindranath Tagore.” It highlights the global concern, noting, “The entire world is watching the horrific and heinous violence against innocent Hindus in Bangladesh on social media.”

Citing the concerns of a Bangladeshi intellectual, Dr Abul Barkat, the letter warns, “The way radical Islamist forces are rising in Bangladesh, the country would witness a Hindu-free state soon.” The appeal emphasizes the need for humanitarian aid and potential refuge, stating, “We urge you to give them shelter in our country through a democratic process, as there are several instances of giving shelter to refugees in the past irrespective of caste, creed, and religion.”

This letter was formally submitted to the DC Cachar today, reflecting the collective anxiety and solidarity of the people of Silchar in addressing this humanitarian crisis.
