Patient infected by Black Fungus referred to Guwahati as SMCH cannot facilitate neurosurgical treatment

Silchar Medical College and Hospital has referred the patient suffering from Mucormycosis to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for better treatment. The patient was presented to SMCH on May 26 with post-Covid complications. Shortness of breath, vision difficulty and headache were his primary complications.

Upon receiving the patient, the doctors performed nasal endoscopy and the KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) test revealed that the patient from Karimganj is positive for Black Fungus or Mucormycosis. The patient was on oxygen support and based on clinical supervision, the doctors started treatment for Black Fungus. The patient’s condition was deemed to be critical.

However, after anti fungal treatment started, the condition improved. “The patient is on room air now and doesn’t require any additional oxygen support. His sensorium is fine too now. Our matter of concern was that he had some sort of involvement in the brain alongwith the nose and eye due to black fungus. As we do not have neurosurgical facilities in SMCH, so he was referred to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where regular neurosurgical operations are performed,” informed Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice-principal if Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

He added, “Surgical debridement is not always required but sometimes patients require removal of affected area in the brain alongwith systemic anti-fungal medications. We can remove the nasal and eye component but from the MRI report there is evidence of brain involvement as well. So we haven’t any taken risk and referred him to GMCH and if required a surgery can be performed there. Otherwise the patient is clinically fit for travel.”

The patient’s condition was assessed and as he was found fit to travel, he was discharged from the hospital at 6:30 pm. The patient will now be treated at the GMCH.
