Why can’t Assam Government accept Bengali as a State Language, questions Pradip Dutta Roy’s BDF

Why can’t the Assam Government accept Bengali as a State Language of Assam even though over one crore of its population speaks Bengali as their mother tongue? This question was raised today in a press conference, by the Chief Convenor of the Barak Democratic Front, Pradip Dutta Roy. The press conference held on February 25, at Silchar Press Club was called by the Barak Democratic Front.

Speaking about his recent arrest, Dutta Roy said, “I would like to thank the Chief Minister of Assam as his government conspired against me for my arrest. I’m glad because the protest and agitation free Barak Valley have finally stirred people’s reaction against the Language Law, I’ve been protesting for. Once again, the people of Barak Valley are heading towards protest to earn their rights for their mother tongue”.

The Convenor who was also a lawyer of the Guwahati High Court, further said, “Our government refuses to recognise Bengali as a State Language of Assam. Au contraire, Jharkhand have recently declared Bengali as their second State Language among some other states in India where Bengalis reside as minority language population”. He further questioned the government and said, “If Karnataka, Jharkhand, Maharashtra government can recognise Bengali as a State Language, even Australia, Germany and other countries can recognise the language Bangali, why Assam Government shows such rigidity? Why won’t the language of over one crore population and a huge community of Assam won’t get recognition from the government”? He has urged everyone in the state to come forward and voice their arguments against this hypocrisy.

At the press conference, the Convenor of BDF Media Cell, Joydeep Bhattacharjee highlighted the unemployment issue of Barak Valley and said, “When the CM was re-elected, he promised 1 lakh new jobs to the youth of Assam. A few days back, the CM said 60,000 candidates will revive their appointment letter soon, but how many were from Barak Valley”? Joydeep questioned even if these numbers are true and doubted whether even 1000 youths of Barak Valley got employed in the last three months.

He further has demanded to employ only the youths of Barak Valley in the vacant posts in Barak Valley in the upcoming employment drive for Grade 3 and Grade 4 staff of the Health Department. Otherwise, he said the government must give grants to the educated unemployed of the state. The Front has warned the government and said, “We won’t tolerate this injustice and partiality towards Bengali and youths of Barak Valley. If this goes on, we will soon launch huge protests with all the unemployed youths of this valley”.

Hrishikesh Dey, Convenor of BDF Media Cell has also questioned the scams going on in this valley and said, “In entire Assam, the Syndicate Raj runs only in Barak. Starting from Coal to sand, stones, LPG and everything, probably only books are not included in this syndicate! Most infamous among them. Is Burmese Supari. We’ve been constantly demanded CBI investigation of this syndicate and recently the CM has also assured to break this. But the focus so far has been limited to Coal and Areca. Even the SP Cachar and DGP Assam Police have promised to see up to the end of this syndicate, but the arrests so far have been made only of the kingpins and the big fishes are still unnamed and free”.

The BDF has urged the government to trace and arrest all the big names who are still roaming free only then the syndicate will end. Otherwise, they will consider the arrests made recently are just for show and are a part of a greater nexus.
