76 lakh Gramin Vikash Bank CM in Barak Valley: "I met CM and he is our last hope" idol maker's daughter who lost 10 lakh

Mousumi Sharmacharjee, a resident of Manipur Bagan in Hailakandi’s Katlicherra area stood outside Assam University for hours to meet the chief minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Her patience and persistence paid off, albeit partially. After running from pillar to post for help, she says her last hope is the chief minister of Assam.

“We have seen that he solves problems for the helpless commoners and so, I have come all the way to knock at his door. He took the memorandum from me and assured me that I will be getting a reply to my letter from him or his office,” said Mousumi Sharmacharjee after meeting the chief minister.

But what is the scam? 45 residents of the Manipur village in Hailakandi opened Fixed Deposit accounts at Assam Gramin Vikash Bank’s Manipur Branch in Katlicherra. As per Sharmacharjee, they were promised that the money will get doubled in ten years. She says that the branch manager Manilal Chauhan directed them to Surya Dhar who explained the scheme and lured them to open the Fixed Deposit accounts.

Her father is an idol maker and invested Rs 10 lakh to open a fixed deposit account. Similarly, a total of 45 such residents invested a total of Rs 76 lakh. But once the time of maturity arrived, that is ten years passed and they went to the bank to withdraw the money, they were refused the exchange.

“We all submitted the certificates that were given by Surya Dhar and approved by the branch manager Manilal Chauhan. But the bankers told us that the certificates are fake. We did not get any money against our respective deposits. This was broken to us in 2019 and since then, we have been running for help and receiving only fake assurances,” informs Sharmacharjee.

She informs that they went to the Assam Gramin Vikas Bank Guwahati branch with the concern. There they were informed that their money was never deposited in the bank and so, they must get the money back from Surya Dhar. “After knowing this, we went to Surya Dhar’s house and his family members informed us that they will return Rs 55 lakh. Though this is less than the principal amount of Rs 76 lakh and far away from the assured Rs 1.52 crore, we agreed to Surya Dhar’s family. But they did not pay us a penny. We have gone to the DC, SP time and again but did not get any help,” wrote Sharmacharjee in the memorandum she submitted to the chief minister.

“Where we should be getting Rs 1.52 crore our heard-earned money is stuck. We did not know if Surya Dhar is a temporary employee or permanent, the manager directed us to him and so, we dealt with him. Now our last hope is that the chief minister will intervene and help us get the money back as we are falling apart due to financial crisis,” Mousumi Sharmacharjee said after meeting the chief minister of Assam outside Assam University.
