9 cadres of Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) surrenders in Cachar, handovers arms including AK-47

Yet another militant organisation based in Cachar has surrendered and chosen the public way of living. Yesterday, 9 cadres of the Cachar Unit of the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) surrendered and chose the peaceful path. They have surrendered their arms and ammunition to the Cachar Police at Lakhipur. 9 fire weapons including AK-47s and ammunition in huge quantity have been surrendered by them in the presence of the DIG of Southern Assam Range and the Cachar SP at Lakhipur Police Station.

Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) aka HMC(D), is an offshoot of the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC), which came into existence in 1986, as a political party spearheading a movement for self-government in the north and northeast of Mizoram. Their area of operations has been primarily in Mizoram; the Hmar inhabited areas of Churachandpur district in Manipur, and the Cachar (with base camps in the Bhuban hill range) and North Cachar Hills districts of Assam.

On December 21, 9 cadres of the Cachar wing of HMC(D) has surrendered and gave up their arms in the presence of Kanakjyoti Sharma, the DIG Southern Assam Range and Numal Mahatta, SP Cachar. It needs to be mentioned that, before the surrender, this unit sent a “message of surrender” to the Cachar Police through their intermediaries.

Yesterday, all the nine cadres who declared surrender came to the Lakhipur Police Station along with their arms and ammunition to surrender. In the presence of the senior police officers and other officials, this unit surrendered and chose the peaceful path, leaving its armed past behind. Yesterday, the organisation’s External Affairs Secretary James MO, CNC Lal Khuma Hmar, General Secretary P. Sanga Hmar, Commanding Officer Eliezer Jyoto, Director Public Relations- Morsang Khuma Hmar, Legislative Secretary L Bana Hmar, Defence Secretary L Hmar, Deputy CNC Ramzao Hmar and others.

Yesterday, the militant organisation’s External Affairs Secretary, James MO said, “We have come here along with our nine cadres and leaders. We have submitted our arms and ammunition. The Chief Minister has promised us an agreement will be signed between us and the government and that is why we have agreed to surrender”.

According to confidential sources, around 104 HPC(D) Cachar militants will ceremoniously surrender to the Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, within the new year.
