Assam University professor develops app win and score predictor; "Not for commercial purposes," Dr. Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee

The App (Indian Premier League Win And Score Predictor: IPL WASP) is now available in Google App. The App is developed prior to the ongoing IPL. This is a data-driven App that has been developed based on the scores of IPL matches of the yesteryears. The App can predict the final score of the first innings of an IPL match when the match is in progress and can predict the chance of victory of the team batting second when the second innings is ongoing of any IPL match. As input the App takes the current score of the match at that instant.

“The App is very simple to operate. It has only two screens- one for the first innings and the other for the second innings. It takes as input from the user the current score of the match and during the second innings, it takes additionally the target score for the chasing team,” informs professor Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee, Head, Department of Statistics.

“The App is developed based on some very basic statistical tools,” he adds. “For Score prediction (in case of First Innings), it applies multiple regression, with the final score of the first innings of the match as the dependent variable and overs completed, runs scored and wickets lost as independent variables. Appropriate formula for obtaining interval estimates of the total score of the first innings is applied.”

For winner prediction in the second innings, logistic regression is used. “Here, the chance of victory of the team batting second in the match is the outcome variable and target for victory, overs completed, runs scored and wickets lost at a particular instant of the match are the independent variables,” Bhattacharjee adds.

The data used to fit these equations are taken from espncricinfo.com. The calculations are based on the all the matches played in the four Indian Premier League seasons from 2016 to 2019. The information about the matches are collected from the above-mentioned website. It can be applied for the prediction of IPL matches and may not be appropriate for International T20 matches.

“We have not specified the equations differently for the different teams participating in the IPL. This is done because the teams are very dynamic and they keep on changing very fast. But equations are derived at the end of each over. So, we got 19 x 2 = 38 equations to reach the solution,” Bhattacharjee adds.

The accuracy of the results is less than 50 percent during the initial overs but increases with increase in the number of overs bowled and reaches as close to 93 percent from the 17th over onwards.

The concept, algorithm, logo and promotional video is developed by Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee (Professor of Statistics, Assam University, India), the computation is done by Hemanta Saikia (Assistant Professor, Assam Agricultural University, India) and a part of data crunching is done by Bishal Dey and Bireshwar Bhattacharjee. The entire Android programming and designing of the App is done by Ritu Hatibaruah, Computer Laboratory Assistant of Assam Agricultural University, India.

The App can be downloaded directly from Google Play Store. The developers of the App have also made a video tutorial how to use the App and has placed it in youtube for the benefit of the users of the App. The tutorial can be seen clicking the link below.

Also for promoting the App the team has designed a rap song titled “Yeah Hain IPL WASP” and put it in youtube with the link-

“No login credentials or registration is required to download or run the App. The user needs to provide only match information as inputs and get the desired output. No personal information from the user like name, email id, phone number, back account details, nationality, website address etc. is asked to download the App,” Bhattacharjee ensures it is safe.

Many app developers use such apps to collate data and then later sell the data points to third-party organisations. Those companies use the data to market their products and services. “The developers of the App are related to academics and are working in universities. There is no intension of earning profit in any form from the App. The App is developed out of love for cricket and out of academic interest of the developers. It is meant to be used by cricket fans around the world and the App shall make the game more interesting. It has nothing to do with gambling. The developers of the App hold strong reservation against the use of Gambling in Sports and do not support Gambling in any form,” says Bhattacharjee.

The team of Prof. Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee along with his Ex-Research Scholar Dr. Hemanta Saikia who developed the App is been in this field of research in cricket analytics for more than a decade now. The team have made some significant contribution in the field that includes development of a measure to quantify fielding performance, development of a mathematical model for selecting a cricket team based on recent performance of cricketers and so on. They have also authored a book called “Cricket Performance Management” published by renowned publisher of scientific books Springer Nature, Singapore.

Soon they are coming up with another App called “Cricket’s Universal Predictor” which shall be applied to predict the final score outcome of any limited over cricket match covering One Day Internationals, International T20, Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Big Bash League (BBL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
