Assam University suspends Prof. Partha Sarkar for alleged involvement in sexual harassment 

Associate professor, department of mass communication Partha Sarkar, has been suspended by Assam University Silchar. A letter issued by the registrar PK Nath states that while the authority is contemplating “disciplinary proceeding” against Dr. Partha Sarkar, the competent authority exercising the powers conferred by Rule 10 (1) CCS (CCA) 1965 and Acts and Statutes of the University places Dr. Sarkar under suspension with immediate effect.

A female student of the varsity who took admission in 2019, lodged a complaint against Dr. Partha Sarka who happens to be her supervisor. In the complaint addressed to the vice-chancellor of Assam University, she alleged that the aforementioned professor harassed her sexually and outraged her modesty as a woman.

The complainant mentioned that she was summoned unnecessarily by Sarkar at his cabin every now and then. She went on to allege that Sarkar would make comments related to her personal life which always made her uncomfortable. In her letter to the vice-chancellor, she complained that Sarkar forced her to accept gifts from him and he always had a special interest in her personal life, way of living and apparels.

She has also alleged that the professor used to randomly video-call her, message her on social media platforms and text on WhatsApp at will, click her candid pictures with his smartphone. The incident she mentions that horrified her the most was when she was invited to join him for a trip to Guwahati. “He had asked me to accompany him to a hotel in Guwahati. When I did not succumb to his sinister plans, he tormented me on social media platforms,” she wrote in her complaint.

The Assam University Students’ Union, yesterday, submitted an official complaint to the vice-chancellor and demanded an immediate suspension of the professor, Partha Sarkar.

The authority did take action and decide to place him under suspension. While under suspension, Partha Sarkar will be paid subsistence allowance as per rule and he has been ordered to not leave the headquarters without permission.
