Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed Indians to be vocal about local brands. He boasted that the country is now manufacturing a high number of PPE kits and N95 masks domestically. He urged Indians to promote Indian brands and local enterprises so that they can solve global needs.

 

All India Mahila Congress President and former Silchar MP, Sushmita Dev took a jibe at the PM. In her note to the Prime Minister on the lines of ‘practice what you preach’ Dev mentioned, ” Please accept my warm regards. Your speech on television yesterday repeatedly appealed to the people to be self-reliant. It encouraged people to produce in India and consume Indian goods.”

 

She added, “Despite the Make in India slogan in the past and your personal election promise to restart the paper mills of Assam which gave employment to thousands of people was closed down. We want to be self-reliant in Assam and I hope you will act on your own advice and reopen the paper mills of Assam in Barak Valley & Nagaon.”

 

It is worth mentioning here that the Cachar Paper Mills and Nagaon Paper Mills have remained shut for more than three years now. All its employees are deprived of their salaries and many of them have lost their lives succumbing to the financial crisis.
