Bhanwar Lal Meena takes charge as Cachar SP; says, "Will work together with all stakeholders"

Transferred from Sadia, Tinsukia, Bhanwar Lal Meena an IPS officer from the Assam Cadre batch of 2013 takes charge as Cachar SP from Manabendra Dev Ray. On July 8, 2020, the government announced a structural reorganisation and transferred Manabendra Dev Ray, the commandant of the 10th APBN Kahilipara.

Talking to Barak Bulletin, Meena said that his first priority will be to ensure that the Central and State Government’s standard operating procedures are followed in the district. “To remain safe, we should restrict the further spread of coronavirus in the district we need to follow social distancing and other measures mentioned in the SOP. The public is already aware of all of them so we will need to ensure its strictly followed,” said Meena.

Apart from that, Meena says Cachar is a “large” district and his focus will be to develop a dynamic ecosystem where the processes are executed fast. One of the biggest concerns in Cachar is road safety. Reckless driving without a valid driving license kills people every now and then. Following the accident, the truck driver absconds and successfully stays away from the Police.

Meena opines that the issue of road safety needs to be addressed jointly. “Will work together with all stakeholders on the issue of road safety. We need to hear from the stakeholders in society and then act on the suggestions to come up with a plan that is meaningful on the ground,” asserted the new SP.

Another issue that former SP, Mugdha Jyoti Dev Mahanta took an aggressive stand on is drug and substance abuse. Mahanta confiscated drugs worth crores and arrested several people involved in the nexus. The smugglers use Cachar as a safe gateway to smuggle drugs from Myanmar to Bangladesh. On the way, few consignments are dropped in the district too which then gets peddled to the youth across the valley. Mahanta stood as a wall to disrupt the supply chain. However, what happened to the people arrested and if the rackets were unveiled, is yet to be known.

Meena said he will study the matter in detail and then act against substance abuse. He said the same when asked about the illegal smuggling of coal through Cachar an issue his predecessor was criticized for.

He joins three days after a 15-year-old died while riding a Bajaj Pulsar without a helmet. All eyes will be on him and how he stops such irregularities in vehicular traffic. Though there is a pandemic that the world is dealing with, other aspects regarding safety, security and law and order continue to be an important issue. Along with the coronavirus pandemic, how Meena and his team handle the rest remains to be seen.
