"Blood was not stolen from SMCH's Blood Bank," In-charge Rajib Biswas; "It was a counting error"

Yesterday, Blood Bank in charge of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Rajib Biswas lodged a complaint alleging that there is a mismatch in the audit. However, as it turns out, he made a mistake in calculation.

“See, a unit of blood being missing is a matter of life and death,” said Dr. Rajib Biswas. “If this blood gets recovered somewhere else and somehow it gets infused into a patient, someone can die,” he asserted.

“That is why I rushed to lodge a complaint. It was a precautionary measure. I just did not want to take any chances with an issue as sensitive as this,” he added.

However, later when Dr. Biswas went to the blood bank and started auditing the stock again, he himself found out there was no mismatch. “Actually, somehow I misread an addition sign as multiplication and that is why the numbers were not adding up. It was my fault,” he confessed.

Members of several NGOs and a professor of Silchar Medical College and Hospital found Dr. Rajib Biswas’ explanation “fishy.” In the age of automation, how could he misread addition as multiplication is something that remains a mystery. Also, he was along with his staff so why did he rush to the police station to lodge a case is another mystery,” stated a professor who recently retired from Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Allegations are plenty against the Blood Bank in Silchar Medical College and Hospital, but the in-charge is indifferent. “We are better than most of the Medical Colleges in Assam. We are doing a commendable job in supplying the need during an emergency,” he said.
