Hindustan Paper Corporation employees of both Panchgram and Nagaon are in their worst time. The employees have not got their salaries since last 15 months and there is no clarity on when they will get it. It’s chaos and carnage for them and all they have got in these months is some verbal consolation none of which materialised to anything concrete.

Out of desperation and sheer plight, the employees travelled to Guwahati to demonstrate in front of Sarusajai, the venue for Advantage Assam (Assam Global Investor’s Summit). The two-day summit is scheduled to commence on February 3, 2018 (tomorrow). The employees planned, they will demonstrate during the opening ceremony, which Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister of Commerce and Industries, Suresh Prabhu are set to attend.

As we hear now, the demonstration has been called off following Chief Minister’s assurance. Sonowal assured, “Paper Mill employees will soon get their pending dues,” Prabhu added, “We are working hard to start the defunct mill as soon as possible.” About 500 employees travelled to Guwahati from Barak Valley and Nagaon

The assurance saga started during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign before the Assam Assembly Election in April 2016. He had assured an instant action but 16 months passed and nothing has happened yet. About 1500 employees are struggling to manage their livelihood. Not only the Prime Minister, Minister of State, heavy industries and public enterprises, Babul Supriyo had also done the same. During ‘Namami Barak’ he said, “The scenario of Cachar Paper Mill is like the relationship status we often see on Facebook- it’s complicated. But, we are trying hard to restart it and soon we should expect some good news.”

Hope this assurance materialises to something positive and the employees celebrate a happy Holi.
