Cachar: Amidst drive against child-marriage in Assam, minor hangs herself fearing delay in wedding

In Assam, as per the instructions from the Chief Minister, the Police have launched a drive against child marriage. With this drive on the backdrop, a 16-year-old in Cachar District’s Dholai area has decided to kill herself by hanging with the branch of a tree.

In South Dholai’s Raj Nagar area, the Police recovered the dead body of a 16-year-old girl hanging with a tree. According to her mother, she was in love with a boy and wanted to marry him. If sources are to be believed then the two families were well-aware about the affair and had agreed to the wedding. But that was before the drive launched by Assam Police where they have detained grooms who married brides below the eligible age.

Mother of the minor girl said that they assured their daughter that they will let her marry her love once she has attained the eligible age but according to them, she was dejected at their decision. On Friday, she wore the bride’s gown from the wardrobe of her sister-in-law. Along with her friends, they did a wedding photoshoot where the minor girl was dressed like a bride.

The mother informed that the minor showed her the images and requested her to have them framed. On Satudray, the mother could not spot her daughter and therefore went for her looking at the woods. She says, she saw her daughter standing by a tree with a rope hanging with the branch. She took a sticked whacked her daughter a couple of times. The mother adds, she snatched the rope and tried consoling her daughter by reiterating that she will soon marry her love.

Because she snatched the rope and tried to explain the situation to the daughter, she thought the daughter understood everything. The mother went back home and got busy with the household chores. However, the daughter did not reach home as promised. Soon, the mother asked her other daughter to go and check and they discovered she is hanging with the same tree.

The Officer in-charge of the Dholai Police Station, Monuj Baruah rushed to the spot with force and recovered the dead body. While the mother said one side of the story, Baruah and his team of officials have refused to make a comment at this stage as the investigation is still going on.
