Cachar Police arrests Enforcement Inspector Bhaba Kalita for his involvement in Coal Scam

Cachar Police has intensified its drive against illegal coal smuggling through Barak Valley. The smugglers have been using Cachar district’s Gumrah as a safe gateway to enter Assam with illegally loaded trucks. Rates are fixed per truck and the Police officials’ alleged involvement help the truckers drive through.

Superintendent of Police, Cachar, Ramandeep Kaur, based on prima facie evidence, launched an operation to counter the coal mafias. First of all, there was a rejig in the Police formation. The in-charges of Ghumrah and Katigorah were transferred and replaced by new officers. Along with that, the additional superintendent of Police, Partha Protim Das was also transferred “In the public interest.”

What comes in as big breaking news, the Cachar Police has now arrested the Enforcement Inspector, Transport department Bhaba Kalita for his alleged involvement in the scam. He was in charge of the check gate at Digarkhal.

As per available information, Kalita was detained for interrogation on October 18. The investigating officers interrogated him for more than 24 hours and based on the investigation, arrested him. Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur confirmed the news of Bhaba Kalita’s arrest to Barak Bulletin.

Kari Taher Ahmed, another alleged Coal mafia was also arrested. If sources are to be believed then the drive against Coal smuggling got intensified after the chief minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s meeting with SP Ramandeep Kaur during the Durga Puja visit. Because of this drive, many alleged Coal Mafias have left the city to seek refuge in other states.
