Cachar's Khairul Jamal (Mamon) Majumdar gets re-elected to BCCI's governing council; "Happy my work has been recognised," he shares

The politics that governs cricket in India is having a busy time. The Annual General Meeting of the governing council is due on December 24. Before that, several contestants are submitting nominations to contest against office-bearers. In some cases, there are no nominations ensuring the re-election of incumbents.

December 17, was the last to file certain nominations. As it turns out, Indian Premier League chairman Brijesh Patel has been re-elected in the governing council. After a proposal from Tamil Nadu Cricket Association chief RS Ramaswamy, Patel’s re-election was just a matter of time. His proposal got the support of Kerala’s Sreejit Nair.

Another cricket administration who got re-elected is Cachar’s Khairul Jamal (Mamon) Majumdar. What comes as a matter of pride for Barak Valley is that there was no nomination against Mamon Majumdar. His name was proposed by Cricket Association of Bengal president Avishek Dalmiya and Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Sanjay Naik seconded Dalmiya junior’s proposal.

“I am happy that my work has been recognised. I am pleased to be re-elected and will continue with my work,” said Majumdar while speaking with Barak Bulletin.

He was elected for the first time last year. As a young administrator in Sourav Ganguly’s team, Mazumdar had a role to play. Conducting IPL in the bio-bubble during the pandemic was an uphill task. Now the governing council will have to work on the schedule for IPL 2021.

Organising the tournament becomes extremely critical for the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI). A significant amount of sponsorship revenues ride on the tournament. To get the title sponsorship of IPL 2020, Dream 11 paid Rs 222 crore to BCCI. Apart from that, there is media rights revenue too. In 2018, media conglomerate, Star India bought the global rights to broadcast and stream IPL for five years that end after the 2022 edition. Star India got the rights for Rs 16,347 crore which makes it  Rs 3,269.4 crore per IPL edition.

With all this money riding on what has become the most expensive cricket league in the world, IPL’s governing council is no mean feat. To be a member twice is a great achievement for Khairul Jamal (Mamon) Majumdar.

Khairul Jamal (Mamon) Majumdar is the son of Bakhtar Majumdar who retired as secretary Finance Government of Mizoram. Mamon Mazumdar originally hails from Kanakpur Part 1, Silchar, Cachar but has relocated to Mizoram and is presently residing in Aizawl. He is considered as the brain behind Mizoram Cricket Association which is about to get its own stadium. Apart from being a Cricket administrator, Majumdar is a Class I contractor.
