Communal tension breaks in Katigorah; "Peace restored," SP Cachar

Several organisations carried out rallies today in various parts of the country as a mark of protest against the vandalisation of temples and idols in Bangladesh. A rally by several Hindu organisations marched in Cachar’s Katigorah area today evening. However, tension broke in the region soon after that.

As per available information, when the rally reached Katigorah’s Kushiarkul area in Jalalpur, a verbal duel broke between the members in the procession and onlookers. According to sources, someone from the rally objected others filming from outside. Soon the verbal duel took a violent shape and a clash broke between two particular communities. Many were carrying Mashal as a part of the march and those too were used as weapons by both parties.

Police officials intervened immediately with riot controlling measures. Speaking about the incident, Ramandeep Kaur, SP of Cachar said, “A group of young residents got into a fight with another group and as a result a few individuals got injured. All of them were taken to the nearest hospital and as briefed by the medical staff, they have been released after preliminary treatment.”

Explaining about the procession, SP Kaur said, “Tomorrow VHP and other organisations have called for protest marches across Cachar district. To generate awareness about that, the rally was carried out today.”

Moments after the incident, an emergency meeting was called by deputy commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli. The meeting is still going on with SP, MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, MLA Kaushik Rai among others. Members of VHP are also attending the meeting.
