Covid19 patient from Hailakandi: Burial done following all "decontamination norms"

65-year-old, Covid19 patient from Hailakandi succumbed last night to the virus that has caused a global pandemic. This marks the first death due to Coronavirus in the Northeast. At 1:54 am, he was declared dead by the doctors in Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy immediately rushed to the hospital to interact with the authorities.

Roy said, “It is unfortunate that despite making all the best efforts we could not save his life. The doctors and nurses did their best, but it was a typical Coronavirus case, something that we have noticed happening a lot in China where the health condition of the patient deteriorates rapidly and they collapse.”

The Hailakandi patient developed pneumonia in his lungs affecting his Oxygen Saturation levels. Silchar Medical College and Hospital doctors immediately shifted him to ICU.

Following his death, his mortal remains were brought back by the Hailakandi District’s health team following the strictest norms of decontamination in an airtight three-layered body-bag. “His family has been informed and is being taken care of, a Janaza was conducted including an offering of shroud. His burial was attended by relatives and friends whilst practicing social distancing and all precautionary measures. People handling him were in PPE with all precautions. His mortal remains were buried following all religious practices. May his soul rest in peace. We pray for the strength of the family,” read the statement issued by the office of Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi.

The statement added, “It is requested that no rumor-mongering/panic-inducing/fear exciting activities be taken up by anybody. We are constantly monitoring all social media and WhatsApp activities and we will not hesitate to take the strictest action necessary.”

Rajdeep Roy informed, “A matter of relief is that no other member from his family tested positive. All five samples tested negative, they are now under quarantine and we will conduct the second test soon.”
