Cyclone Remal: Yellow Alert for Barak Valley Region

The Regional Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for the Barak Valley region of Assam as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into Cyclone Remal by Sunday evening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the weather system would turn into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by Friday morning (May 24). It is forecasted to strengthen into a cyclonic storm by the morning of May 25, reaching the coast of Bangladesh and West Bengal by May 26 evening as a severe cyclonic storm.

The Barak Valley region, comprising the districts of Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj, is under a yellow alert from May 24 to May 27. Thunderstorms with lightning are predicted at isolated places on May 24 and May 25. On May 26, the region may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at speeds of 30-40 kmph. By May 27, wind speeds could increase to 40-50 kmph with very heavy rain expected at isolated places. These warnings indicate the potential for significant weather disturbances, although no areas in Assam are under orange or red alerts.

Across Assam, only yellow warnings have been issued so far. This indicates the need for residents to stay updated and prepared but not to panic. Maintaining calm is crucial during such events, as preparedness and accurate information can significantly mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions.

While most of Assam is not facing severe warnings, the neighbouring state of Mizoram is experiencing continuous yellow warnings for many of its regions. This highlights the varying impact of Cyclone Remal across different areas and the need for regional awareness and readiness.

The IMD and Regional Meteorological Department base their predictions on advanced weather monitoring systems and data analysis. These organisations play a vital role in forecasting severe weather events and issuing timely alerts. People are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow safety guidelines. Staying informed and prepared can help ensure the safety and well-being of all as Cyclone Remal approaches.
