Doctors strike in Silchar Medical College and Hospital; OPD, OT could remain shut

As a mark of protest against the assault on doctors in NRS Hospital Kolkata, the postgraduate trainee association, junior doctors association, the student association of Silchar Medical College will follow a 24 hours strike. In a letter addressed to the Principal of SMCH, the PGT union informed that the outpatient department, operation theatre and other non-emergency services will remain shut for a period of 24 hours.

The union also informed that all the unions will carry on with their peaceful protests demanding immediate arrest of the individuals who assaulted the doctors in Kolkata. The letter states, “With due respect, we would like to inform you that in solidarity with the pan India cause and following the appeal of IMA and other medical associations of the country, we the PGT Association, JDA and Students Union of SMCH has also decided that all non-emergency services including OPD, OT will be shut from 6 a.m. tomorrow for a period of 24 hours.”

For the readers, at NRS Hospital, Kolkata, a 75-year-old died on late Monday night following which the attendants of the patient started blaming the doctors and beating them. The hospital administration irked by the reaction refused to hand over the dead body to the family members. Two truckload of people reached the hospital and started beating doctors who were serving patients in the hospital. During the assault, around 20 doctors got injured. A junior doctor Paribaha Mukhopadhyay was beaten by bricks that led to his skull being fractured while Yash Tekwani had multiple fractures on his ribs and spine
