Drop in Covid cases but growth in deaths; 6 died at SMCH in the last 24 hours 342 positive, 124 on Oxygen support

The steep spike has started to gradually flatten in the Cachar district. The health department informed that 342 individuals have tested positive for COVID19 on Tuesday. Currently, there are 231 patients admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), and out of them, 124 are on Oxygen support. This is by far the highest number of patients SMCH has even had on Oxygen support.

Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice-principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) informed that 18 patients are on ventilator support. On Tuesday, 17 patients took admission to the COVID ward while 23 got discharged. Currently, there are 1,586 active COVID cases in the district, and out of them, 391 are admitted to various hospitals reporting a 24.% hospitality rate.

While the drop from 453 cases on Monday to 342 on Tuesday is a moment of respite, the number of deaths brings in more reasons to worry. Six individuals have died in Silchar Medical College and Hospital after testing positive for COVID 19. 51-year-old Sandhya Goud from Paloirbasti, Cachar was admitted on 7th May, she breathed her last at 7:15 p.m. on May 17, 2021

65-year-old Ronibijoy Bin of Choto Dudhpatil, Cachar district was admitted at SMCH on 17th May and he was declared dead at 1:45 am. on May 18. 62-year-old Parimal Chaudhari from Rangirkhari Silchar was admitted at SMCH on May 15 and he died at 6:40 am. on May 18.

74-year-old Islam Uddin Laskar from Hailakandi was admitted at SMCH on May 14, he breathed his last at 11-05 am. on May 18. Khounish Ranjan Bhattacharjee (76)  from Tarapur Silchar was admitted at SMCH on May 13, he died at 9:20 am. on May. 62-year-old Nur Khatun Choudhury from Uttar Joshnabad of Hailakandi district was admitted at SMCH on May 16, she died at 1:10 p.m. on May 18.

Karimganj registered 86 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 6,090. Of the 86 active cases detected on Tuesday, 68 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and 18 under RT-PCR.

The district has currently 681 active COVID-19 cases while 103 patients have been discharged from hospitals and home isolation on Tuesday. 2,596 swab samples were collected on Tuesday.

In Hailakandi district, 116 individuals have tested positive on May 18 taking the active cases to 824. Hailakandi is reporting a 6.19% positivity rate. Overall, in Barak Valley, the number of active cases stands at 3091.
