"Fill in Silchar Medical College Vacancies in Three Months": Stern Message by Assam Medical College and Hospital Employees' Union

The sixth biennial general session of Assam Medical College and Hospital Employees’ Union was held on January 29 and 30 at Silchar Medical College and Hospital premises. This is the first time the session has been held in the Barak Valley. State Minister Parimal Suklabaidya was present as a guest. Health Minister Himanta Bishwa Sharma, Minister Piyush Hazarika, Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy, DMP of Health Department Dr Anup Kumar Barman and other dignitaries were also to attend the function however they did not come in the end and there was a bit of an annoyance regarding it in the programme. The number of attendees was also negligible. Members of the State Committee of Assam Medical College and Hospital Employees’ Union stood infront of Minister Parimal Suklabaidya and made their demands clear to the state government.

They said, “Silchar Medical College and Hospital is as important as Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, but the two hospitals have never developed at the same rate. We want the vacancies in Silchar Medical College and Hospital to get filled in alongwith improvement in it’s infrastructure. We appeal to the government to fill in the empty posts within three months or else we will be forced to protest. “

State Committee General Secretary Dilip Sangma, President Diganta Hazarika and others also spoke on the occasion. “While the state government is talking of equal development of Barak and Brahmaputra Valley, we want hospitals in the two areas to be developed at the same pace also. Silchar Medical College and Hospital is the most trusted medical institution in Barak Valley and it’s surrounding areas. However still there is no Neurology or Cardiology department in it. There is lack of clean water in the hospital and no adequate security. We want the government to look into the matter and solve the problems immediately. Our organisation wants to work hand in hand with the government but if the demands are not met, we have the capability to agitate and make our voice heard.”

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Parimal Suklabaidya said, “Silchar Medical College and Hospital has acted as the largest reliable institution in Barak Valley to curb the outbreak of coronavirus last year. I myself have been involved with this hospital for a long time and will definitely raise the issues that have come up today with the government and try to resolve them as soon as possible. In the past, there was no environment in which any demand made to the government could be met easily. Now as the environment has been created under the able leadership of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonwal, it will not take long for the fair demands to be met. He not only speaks of development in Barak and Brahmaputra Valley equally but also performs them. I believe that when I present your demands to him, he will definitely fulfill them.”

Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, Superintendent Dr. Abhijit Swamy, Vice Chairman of the Hospital Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, District Administration Official Bibhor Agarwal and other office bearers of the State Committee attended the function. Although the ceremony started at the scheduled time, the guests delayed their arrival. Attendance at the event as well was extremely negligible. At one time the principal of the college, Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, expressed his displeasure due to it.
