Flyover in Silchar: "Drawing is ready but the ball is in the court of the people," Himanta Biswa Sarma

Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited Cachar on March 1 to inaugurate and announce massive developmental projects worth approximately Rs 1,208 crores.

During the press briefing, the Chief Minister was questioned about the long-pending demand of the people of Silchar – the Flyover. Chief Minister Sarma responded, stating, “Constructing a flyover would require extensive land acquisition, hence we need to consult the people of Silchar and Cachar. We must decide if we are willing to cooperate with the government regarding land acquisition.”

He further elaborated, “To proceed with the construction of a flyover, we must make alternative vehicular traffic arrangements as the road will need to be temporarily blocked. The design is ready, but the decision lies with the people of Silchar.”

Sarma was also questioned about the list of BJP candidates who will contest in the general elections to the Lok Sabha. “The list has been finalized; it may be announced today, tomorrow, or within seven days. The timing of the announcement is at the discretion of the party’s headquarters, and they will do so in due course,” asserted Chief Minister Sarma.

This development occurs as Minister Parimal Suklabaidya’s name is being speculated as the frontrunner to contest from Silchar. Moon Swarnakar, who contested Assembly elections from Algapur in Hailakandi, is also believed to be in contention for the Silchar seat.

The chief minister was reminded by the press that during his tenure in Congress, the Gogoi Government had also announced Rs 1000 crore projects, which never materialized. “Our promises are fulfilled, as evidenced by the newly inaugurated Silchar Cancer Centre,” responded the CM, gesturing towards the facility.
