Inaugural inter-school badminton tournament in Silchar garners great traction

At a time when Indian sports and Badminton enthusiasts are celebrating India’s historic win in Thomas Cup, in Silchar, a badminton tournament arranged by DSA has attracted a lot of raw badminton talent. Sunil-Manjushri Dutta Memorial Interschool open badminton tournament had started to bring out the raw talents from the ground, and it got a nice response in the first year. Silchar District Sports Association could not hold the tournament in the last two years due to the COVID Pandemic. And this year the tournament was a bit delayed, but it could generate an enthusiastic response. This year, a record number of 159 competitors from 25 schools participated in the tournament.

The tournament started ok May 13 at the Indoor stadium of DSA. The prizes sponsored by Saibal Dutta were distributed today. The tournament is dedicated to the late parents of Saibal Dutta; this year, it was the second occasion.

This was the first sporting tournament organized after the governing committee was set up under Bijendra Prasad Singh; the tournament was open for all; those who were not members of DSA could participate in the tournament.

The tournament was played in four age group categories. Class 2-5 (Boys & Girls), Class 5-7 (Boys & Girls), Class 8-10 (Boys & Girls) and class 5-10 (Boys & Girls). The tournament could not be held due to the Pandemic, said Bijendra Prasad Singh, “we are planning to hold the tournament again in winter,” Singh informed.

Sonakshi Singh won the championship in the Girl’s category of classes 5-8. Sonakshi and Binata Singh won the doubles in the same category. Adrija Choudhury and Upasana Das become runner up. Arpita Singh won the championship in the class 2-4 group, and Arti Singh became runner-up. Adrija won the championship in the class 8-10 group. Ayanbha Deb won the class 2-4 group in Boy’s category, runner up Soumen Dutta.

Sujusa Raha Basumatary become the champion in class 5-8 group, runner up Adity Baidya. Indranil Bhowmik has won in class 8-10 group. NGY Singh has got the award for promising shuttler in the boy’s category, and Jahin Laskar won the same for Girl’s.
