Karimganj Police confiscates 70,000 YABA tablets; "Part of statewide drive against drugs," SP Mayank Kumar Jha

In a successful raid, the Karimganj Police has successfully busted 70,000 Yaba tablets and has detained three culprits connected to this racket. According to Google search results, the market price of these Yaba tablets in the Bangladesh drug market is around 3.5 crores to 7 crores. The Police suspect that the tablets of these drugs were smuggled into India from Myanmar and were intended to be smuggled across the international border in Karimganj to Bangladesh. Large quantities of drugs have been recovered in the past as well, but this is the largest drug bust in the district this year. Although the three arrested youths are locals, the police think that there is a big foreign racket involved in this drug trafficking case.

After receiving a tip off from undercover sources, the police officers conducted a raid in the Sharifnagar area of Karimganj district on Tuesday and caught three people with a huge amount of drugs. One of the detainees is 24 years old, one is 18 years old and the other is 19 years old. They live in Kanishail and Sharifnagar areas. Although the detainees are locals, the police suspect that there is a foreign link with this trafficking.  Although the department has a substantial amount of information regarding this case, still it will not be made public right now for the sake of investigation.

Mayank Kumar Jha has launched several anti-drug campaigns after joining the Karimganj district. Crores of rupees worth of drugs have been recovered and many people have also been arrested connected to these cases. He said, “Not only Karimganj district, but this is a part of statewide drive against drugs and illegal smuggling. Our forces are monitoring drug traffickers in various ways and targeting their movements at the right time, with success. The amount of drugs seized today is at least the biggest success this year.  Much more drugs were seized last year too. Our guess is that there is a big foreign racket involved, but it is a matter of investigation. Attempts are being made to smuggle drugs not only through Karimganj to other states or the international border, but also in our district as well. We have to stop that too because it is harming the youth of our society. Of course, in this regard, the cooperation and awareness of the general public are very important.”

The seizure of such a large quantity of drugs has caused a stir in various quarters. In the past, several large-scale smuggling operations have been busted in collaboration with the police and the Border Security Force (BSF). The BSF officials said that drug traffickers back then used to stand on this side of the border, throwing small packets of drugs across the border. Money from the other side of the border was packed in small packets and was thrown here. The locals noticed this and informed the police and consequently, some people were arrested.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during the run-up to the Assembly elections, had announced that a special narcotics unit will be set up in the Barak Valley. Standing in Silchar, he said, “Drug trafficking in this valley has increased tremendously and has got some international links. A special narcotics unit will be set up in the Barak Valley soon to prevent these incidents from happening.” The BJP-led government has been formed in Assam for the second consecutive time and the police have increasingly launched a series of crackdowns on illegal drugs. Maybe in the future, a special narcotics department will indeed be launched in the valley.
