Lions Club Silchar Central to Organise its 17th Mass Wedding Ceremony on February 21

Just like every year, the Lions Club Silchar Central is organizing mass wedding this year too, which is going to be its 17th annual edition. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year the arrangement has been a bit different. So far, six couples have registered their names and a mass wedding ceremony will be organized with them, which is scheduled on February 21. They have been informed that no more than 10 family members will be allowed to attend the wedding. Members of the Lions Club Silchar Central held a press conference in Silchar on Tuesday to discuss the details of this mass wedding ceremony.

Co-chairman of the Mass Marriage Committee, S.S. Endaw, said, “Considering the possibility of Coronavirus infection, we have decided to shorten the programme compared to previous years. Gathering at the event will be slightly lower than in other years and will fully comply with the Covid protocols, including social distancing. Six couples will tie knots this time with the help of Lions Club Silchar Central. 10 family members per couple will be able to take part in the event. The number of our invited guests has been reduced. Whatever the situation, our commitment to social work will not stop, hence this event is being organized. Those who are getting married on that day will be provided with various gifts and fooding for the wedding day. They will be provided with a month’s ration with all the necessary things like blankets, mosquito nets etc. so that they don’t face any difficulty starting a family right after marriage.”

Those who are getting married on that day are Dipan Bhumij and Saraswati Bhumij of Bikrampur Tea Garden, Tinkan Das of Leburbandh and Jhumki Das of Rajatila, Ramanuj Kalindi of Lediachhara Tea Garden and Kutli Akura of Chhoto Dudhapatil, Suprabhat Das of Tarapur Shibbari Road and Sarada Kumari Bhura of Rongpur, Santanu Urang of Nagar Tea Garden and Agnita Urang of Hatichhara Tea Garden, Sujit Kanoo of Chengcoorie Tea Garden and Sujita Goala of Chengduar.

Dr. Mohammad Masoom, President of Lions Club Silchar Central, President Sumit Das, Arindam Bhattacharya, Vice Chairman of Lions Eye Hospital, R.N. Dutta, Co-Chairman of the wedding ceremony and other members participated in the press conference.

They further said that for about three decades they have been able to marry off more than 300 couples through this mass wedding ceremony which in turn improved their lives. They said, “Parents of many families cannot marry off their children even after being eligible for marriage due to financial reasons. Lions Club thinks that this event is as important as any other social event that’s why we are still organising this event every year. Despite the Covid situation this year, we are organizing the event and hopefully, this trend will continue in the future as well.”
