Man attacks police team in Karimganj village

A man attacked a team of police with a sharp weapon at Kukital village on Tuesday night. The team went to his house, as per the Karimganj chief judicial magistrate’s order to bring his six-month-old child from him.

Speaking about the matter, Bazaricherra police station’s officer-in-charge Gautam Das said the man Ramu Das, a resident of Kukital is married to Puja Das of Badarpur. The couple has two daughters, one is six-year-old, while the other’s is just six months.

Das said Ramu’s wife told police that Ramu has been torturing her physically over the past few years. Around four months back, Ramu came to the home in an inebriated condition and assaulted her. He threw her and their elder daughter out of his house, and kept the younger one with him.

Thereafter, she came to her parents’ house and lodged a complaint with police against her husband. The matter went to the court. It ordered that the child should be handed over to her mother. The operation by the police team on Tuesday was conducted as per the court’s order.

Sources said that around 10 pm last night, the police officials reached Ramu’s house, which is located in Kukital under Patharkandi constituency, around 90km from Silchar.

As soon as they reached the house, Ramu attacked them vehemently with a sharp-edged weapon. The completely-unexpected attack triggered panic among the police personnel. Some of whom sustained injuries while rushing to safer places.

The matter was informed to Karimganj superintendent of police Gaurav Upadhyay. After which, BSF jawans and another team of police reached the spot and recovered the child from the house. The baby was later handed over to her mother.

Ramu was also arrested for attacking the police team. He was produced before a court in Karimganj on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody.
