National Highway 6 that connects Silchar with Guwahati via Shillong is partly open for light vehicles

The National Highway 6 is now open for small vehicles between Sonapur and Ratacherra that was blocked at different places due to landslides in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia District. Hundreds of goods and passenger vehicles were stranded between Sonapur and Ratacherra for two days due to landslides at many places along the highway.

According to the information shared by the District Administration of East Jaintia Hills, small vehicles can now move in one direction at a time. East Jaintia Police department has informed on Twitter that, “The Route on NH06 from Khliehriat-Sonapur-Ratachera is as of 3 pm today open and traffic is moving, but all drivers are advised to drive cautiously as the road condition is still not very conducive for driving due to incessant rainfall and mudslides.”

Cachar DC Keerthi Jalli has appealed to the general public to not panic as a few passengers are still stranded at the stretch between Sonapur and Ratacherra. “In this testing times, it is important to help each other,” said Jalli.

The East Jaintia Hills district administration could not give a clear idea about the number of vehicles and people stranded there, but they shared that they arranged food and water for the people there. The administration has also arranged for JCB, an excavator, for clearing the road from further mudslides.
