Nazia Yasmin submits nomination; says "I am the alternative, people can trust"

Many thought it would be a one-on-one fight between the Congress’ Sushmita Dev and BJP’s Rajdeep Roy in Silchar in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as CPIM and AIUDF announced that they would not field any candidate to contest from Silchar constituency.

As a surprise to many, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party decided to field Nazia Yasmin Mazumder to contest from Silchar. Since the day her name was announced, she has been garnering more and more popularity on the ground.

Today, she submitted her nomination to the deputy commissioner of Cachar and said, people are tired of Congress and BJP and is now looking for an alternative who can develop Cachar and Barak Valley.

An engineer, Nazia left her job at Tata Consultancy Service as she wanted to join active politics. She believes one must join politics if he or she wants to bring changes in the society.

So is she contesting only to divide the minority votes and harm Congress candidate Sushmita Dev? “That is not my agenda” says Nazia Yasmin. She adds, “My agenda is to develop Cachar and work for the benefit of the people of the valley. Like Moinul Haque Choudhury, I also want to contribute for the betterment of the society. Now when you build a bridge, you build it for everyone and not a particular community.”

Taking a jibe at Congress candidate Sushmita Dev and her party, she said they use minority community to win elections, “Why is she only bothered about minority votes. She is an MP and her father was a minister. With such a legacy, if she has worked for the people who voted for her, she must not be worried at all. Why is she insecure of me and losing minority votes,” Yasmin questions.

Yasmin did not spare Prime Minister Narendra Modi either, “Where are the Achhe Din Modi promised,” she questioned. Adding, “BJP talks of development all the time but most of them are only on the paper. The ground reality is that there has been no development that took place in last five years in Silchar.”

Her appeal to the voters of Silchar is to give her a chance as she has a plan to create jobs following Conrad Sangma model in Meghalaya. “Silchar is a land of opportunity, you only need the right vision,” she concludes.
