No lockdown in Cachar; unanimously decided in a meeting convened by DC Keerthi Jalli

Considering the rapid rise in the number of COVID positive cases in Cachar, the deputy commissioner, Keerthi Jalli had called for a meeting with the senior citizens and public representatives.

In the meeting attended by Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy, intellectuals from the district and other legislators, it was unanimously decided that lockdown is not the solution.

“Few suggested that a seven-day lockdown is essential in Cachar at this stage. But then there was a strong counter-argument that the lockdown for such a short duration won’t provide any relaxation. In the end, it was unanimously decided that lockdown is not a solution,” informed Rajdeep Roy, Silchar MP.

After the initial discussion on lockdown, Roy said that the emphasis moved to law enforcement agencies and their role during the pandemic. He said that the intellectuals in the meeting suggested that the administration must ensure that everyone is strictly following the COVID protocols.

Roy also informed, “The senior citizens from all spheres appreciated the hard work put in by the district administration, health department and the MPs and MLAs.”

Renowned Oncologist, Padma Shri Dr. Ravi Kumar Kannan underscored the need for slowing down the rate of COVID positive cases and for regular use of masks, social distancing, and personal hygiene. Dr.Kannan dispelled some misconceptions about corona being spread through fruits and vegetables and said the virus cannot thrive in dead cells. He also emphasised on educating the masses on the dos and don’ts related to the virus and generating awareness in a big way.

Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli while explaining the purpose of convening the meeting, said the “administration is well placed and equipped in terms of health infrastructure and health personnel to tackle the COVID-19 situation.”

A press statement issued by the DDIPR claims, “Jalli said that the administration has taken up a slew of measures for the treatment of asymptomatic and symptomatic cases in COVID Care Centres and in SMCH.”

The press statement adds, “She underscored the need for community-driven action to prevent the spread of the virus and urged the senior citizens who are the voice of the society, to use their influence to make people aware of the utmost necessity to strictly adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines to overcome the situation.”

Addressing the elite gathering, superintendent of Police, Bhanwar Lal Meena, said a sense of responsibility has to grow among the people at large and civil society has to play a pivotal role in building awareness to contain the coronavirus. The SP informed the participants that the police will take tough action against traders not adhering to the COVID-19 guidelines.

The meeting was also attended by the District Development Commissioner, Jessica Lalsim, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Rajib Roy, and Sumit Sattawan were also present.
