Ornaments and cash looted from Patharkandi house; probe initiated

A gang of miscreants reportedly looted ornaments and Rs. 17,200 in cash from a house at Gokila village in Karimganj district late on Friday night.

A first information report was lodged with Patharkandi police station on Saturday.

Pranesh Kumar Sinha, owner of the house, stated that a gang of six miscreants entered into their house by breaking the rod of a window at around 1:45 am last night. He along with his wife, who were fast asleep, git alert hearing noises.

Sinha in his statement mentioned that on being confronted, the miscreants attacked them. One of them put a sharp weapon on his neck and forced him to give them the key of the almirah. When they tried retaliating, the miscreants tied his hands and grasped his wife Ranjita and threatened to kill them if they did not abide by what they said.

Helpless, Pranesh gave them the key following which the miscreants tried to open the almirah but failed. Thereafter, they broke the lock of the almirah with an iron rod and took away ornaments including a gold necklace, two gold chains, three rings, three pairs of gold earrings, eight gold bangles, two silver bangles and a silver chain. Besides, an amount of Rs. 17,200 was looted.

While leaving the house, the miscreants threatened them of dire consequences if they informed the police about the incident. Pranesh informed that they were speaking in Hindi.

On Saturday, Pranesh and his wife Ranjita, who sustained some injuries, went to a hospital for medical aid and later a first information report was lodged.

Patharkandi police station’s officer in-charge D. Thakuria said a probe had been initiated in connection with the incident. He suspected that the act was committed by a professional gang of thieves and hoped the case would be solved soon.
