People gathering to see rising water-level, click selfie with flooding water; Cachar DC restricts movement of light vehicles

Hundreds of families have become homeless in Cachar as their houses got inundated due to flooding water. The rising water level of river Barak has wrecked havoc in most parts of the district. River water is flooding into residential areas of the district. CRPF, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, SDRF, NDRF, Assam Police, all have joined hands to extend relief and rescue to the needy.

When it is a chaos and carnage together, there is a section of population for whom this is a vacation. Today evening, in Silchar’s Annapurna Ghat, Sadarghat, there was a huge gathering. Most in the crowd had gathered to see the flow of the river. Riding or driving the private vehicles they reached the vulnerable zones, parked their vehicles to get down of them and click selfies with flooding water. By doing this, they are not only risking their lives but also putting the lives of other in danger.

Cachar DC, Keerthi Jalli said, “We can only help those who want to be helped. We have seen people are stepping out to shop or watch the ongoing work at dyke systems. When they drive on the road, they cause unnecessary vibrations that can result in sinking of the road. The clear order in the district is that one must only step out to avail essential services.”

Today evening, Deputy commissioner of Cachar has issued an order restricting the movement of light motor vehicles. “In view of the ongoing Floods in Cachar district, I do hereby restrict unnecessary plying of vehicies (two wheelers/three wheelers/four wheelers) which is causing much difficulty in rescue & relief operations in the district. This order shall be effective from 6.00 AM of 19th May, 2022 and will remain in force for next 48 hours. This order comes into force with immediate effect,” states the order.

Another such order states, “Deputy Commissioner cum Chairperson, District Disaster Management Authority, Cachar in view of the ongoing Floods in Cachar Direct do hereby direct that all Educational Institutions (Govt. or Private) & Non-Essential Private Establishments of Cachar District shall remain closed for the next 48 hours.”

“This order shall be effective from 6.00 AM of 19th May, 2022 and will remain in force for the next 48 hours,” the order concludes.
