Police opens fire in Katigorah to arrest Burmese Supari smuggling kingpin Hazi Nizam Uddin; Raids in Altaf Hussain, Zakir Talukdar's house

Cachar Police has achieved a major success in its drive against illegal smuggling of Burmese Supari through Cachar. The betel nuts enter India through Champai border in Mizoram and then transported to the rest of the country via Silchar. After Nayan Ghosh was arrested, the Police attained several leads.

Barak Bulletin is in a position to confirm that the Cachar Police has arrested one of the kingpins in this nexus – Haji Nizam Uddin from his residence in Katigorah. As per available information, based on specific information, Cachar Police raided Haji Nizam Uddin’s residence early this morning. Noticing the Police, he tried to escape and that is when the Police opened fire. At least three rounds were fired but none of the bullets hit him. Eventually, the Police managed to arrest him.

Sources confirmed that he has been brought to Silchar and will be interrogated by the Cachar SP, Dr. Ramandeep Kaur.

In another similar raid, in Silchar’s Chamragudam area, the Police officials have detained two individuals. Police raided the residence of Zakir Hussain Talukdar and detained his wife Joynara Begum. One Rupak Paul was also detained from the residence but the Police could not trace Zakir. Speaking with the media, Rupak Paul confessed that Zakir in involved in the business of transportation of Burmese Supari.

Owner of Cachar Traders, Altaf Hussain’s residence has also been raided. As per latest available information, the Police has raided his shop in Kalibari Road too. Chabi Paul, who is also a resident of the Kalibari Road area has Police raiding the house.

SP Cachar refused to comment as the operation is still ongoing.
