The long fight to name Silchar Railway station as Bhasha Shahid Station is set to get longer. Answering to Member of Legislative Assembly Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha’s question on the change of name of Silchar Station, Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister, Transport, Commerce & Industry, Parliamentary affairs replied in Assembly, “The government has decided to stay the change of name to maintain peace and harmony. This change of name can be a threat to law and order in the region.”

People of this region has been fighting to rename the station in the city as Bhasha Shahid Station to pay homage to the 11 martyrs, who laid their lives fighting for the honour of Bangla language in Assam on May 19, 1961. Many official appeals had been made to several authorities and the Central Government had approved the change of name.

But a government body recently submitted a report to the state government stating that the change of name might cause communal unrest in the region. Following which the state government decided to stay the proceedings and the name is yet to be changed.

Today Patowary’s statement in the state assembly is certain to hurt many sentiments in Barak Valley as this has come as a big setback for the long going struggle. Echoing thoughts of many, Bhasha Shahid Station Smarak Samiti General Secretary Rajib Kar told All India Radio that its pretty hypocritical of government to make such statements on the Assembly floor as Cachar district police super in 2016 said that the change of name will bring peace and harmony among all communities in the region.

Ajoy Roy of Sammilito Samskritik Mancho, has called for a meeting tomorrow to decide the road ahead.
