In an official letter, the government of Assam announced that considering the “Public Interest” specialist doctor in the medicine department, Dr. Kallol Bhattacharjee is being transferred to Diphu.

After spending 26 years in Silchar Medical College and Hospital, in his new role, Bhattacharjee will be transferred to Assam Hills Medical College and Research Centre in Diphu. In the notice, it is mentioned that Bhattacharjee must assume his role at Assam Hills Medical College within the next 48 hours.

Normally, in such cases, the principal of the incumbent medical institution is asked to release the person transferred but in Bhattacharjee’s case, the additional secretary himself released the doctor and asked him to join the new role. As per the available information, the release procedure is already at its last stage.

While in the notice it is mentioned that the decision is taken considering “public interest” it is widely believed that there is more to it. Bhattacharjee’s name surfaced time and again in local reports in connection with the catering scam in SMCH. Bhattacharjee was recently released from his role of diet section in charge and deputy superintendent. After Dr. Babul Bezbaruah became the Principal a Police investigation was initiated, Bhattacharjee went on to get himself an anticipatory bail.
