Racial profiling and atrocities against minorities: Kamalakhya Purkayastha writes to Home Minister

In recent development of violent attacks on the linguistic minorities, the North Karimganj MLA, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, has written to the Union Minister of Home Affairs for immediate intervention and the protection of their Fundamental Rights.The Member of the Legislative Assembly has also express his solidarity with the Choudhury Couple who sat on hunger strike on the 23rd of January. Purkayastha who is also the Working President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, addressed the letter to the Home Minister with the subject “Continuous atrocities on the linguistic minority citizens living in Meghalaya”.

In his letter he wrote, “The continual hate threats and atrocities on the linguistic minorities, mainly Bengalis, of Meghalaya has gone too far in recent years.”. Citing some incidents, the Member of the opposition party alleged, “the Bengalis, who have been inhabitants of the State since time immemorial, have been subjected to a situation of fear and helplessness due to such threats and atrocities. Several such incidents of violent attack on them in recent times have put them to life-threat. Last year’s attack on Ramkrishna Mission, attack on Bengali boys playing on the playground by Khasis have not even attracted proper attention of the State Government despite several complaints and appeals resulting in rise in such incidents.”

Expressing his support to SK Choudhury and Kalpana Choudhury he said,” Yesterday (23rd January) an indigenous Bengali couple, finding no other alternative, have gone for a hunger strike protesting against such hate threats and subsequent inaction by the State Government.” Through his letter dated on the 24th January, the vocal MLA has seeked the help and intervention of the Home Ministry.
