Amar Nath Khandelwal, a beloved figure in Silchar, Assam, passed away on Monday, 19th February 2024. Born on 15th May 1940, in Silchar, he was the son of Late Suraj Bhan Khandelwal and Late Hira Devi Khandelwal.
Amar Nath was deeply involved in various social service organisations throughout his life. He was a respected leader and served in numerous capacities within the community. His educational journey led him to achieve a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and an LLB degree, earning top positions in his academic pursuits.
He was actively involved in several organisations, including Lions Club of Silchar Central, Seth Chhotelal Educational Trust, and JYOTI, a socio-literary organisation. Additionally, he dedicated his time to initiatives like the Barak Valley Health Care Welfare Trust and Siddheswar Baruni Mela Committee, showcasing his commitment to improving healthcare and cultural events in the region. Furthermore, he served as Chairman of Silchar Lions Eye Hospital for about 20 years, contributing significantly to the healthcare sector.
Amar Nath’s passion for education was evident through his involvement with institutions like AK Chanda Law College and Chhotelal Seth Institute. He also contributed significantly to the promotion of Hindi language and culture as the President of Cachar Hindi Milan Mandir and through his association with various Hindi literary organisations.
Beyond his local contributions, Amar Nath was an avid traveller, exploring destinations like Thailand, Hong Kong, and Japan. He was a lifelong member of esteemed organisations such as the Indian Red Cross Society and Lions Clubs International, where he held leadership positions and received honours for his dedication.
Amar Nath Khandelwal’s legacy as a community leader, advocate for education, and promoter of social welfare will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. His impact on Silchar and beyond will continue to inspire future generations to serve their communities with dedication and compassion.
