*Show of “influence”: Wild ‘Baarat’ celebration on road causes traffic jam again in Silchar*

Bang in the middle of peak hours, a group of people dressed in traditional wedding attire start doing Bhangra (Punjabi Dance Form) almost in the middle of the road. It’s entertaining for a few seconds but a nightmare for the hour next. It causes traffic jam and it has been happening again and again in Silchar.

A very influential businessman hosted a grand wedding last night. It was his daughter’s big day and he left no stone unturned to make it a gala event. However, that caused a lot of problems for the common man and an Ambulance was stuck on the other side. Well lit umbrellas, band party with several members and innumerable dancing attendees started marching towards Link Road from Rangirkhari side. They were bursting crackers, again, in the middle of the road and long queues on both the sides waited for them to get done with their celebrations.

“It was not celebration, it was just a tamasha to show off their position in the society. However, I don’t blame them, I blame the authorites. They book roadside vendors for using plastic, they shoo away hawkers but when an influential individual creates a ruckus in the middle of the road, they just stand and stare,” said a teacher who was stuck in the traffic jam.

On the other side of the divider, the road that heads towards Rangirkhari, an Ambulance was stuck at the jam wailing its siren. A link road resident went to the driver and asked if there is a patient inside, “There was no patient but he said that he got a call to pick a patient who is in critical condition. He was supposed to drop the patient to a health care centre and was in an emergency call,” said the Link Road resident.

After an hour of celebrations, traffic police in-charge with other senior officials reached the spot and cleared the jam. “They could have easily come a little earlier. It is clear that the authority wanted them to celebrate at ease in the middle of the road and once that was done they reached the spot,” the teacher added.

The Police officials were not all soft as they asked the attendees to stop burning remains of the crackers in the middle of the road, “The stretch of the road where they burst crackers was white with papers. The attendees started burning the paper remains of the crackers in the middle of the road. Police officials stopped them,” said the Link Road resident who was present there.

Police officials refused to comment on the story, however, this is not the first time such a wild celebration caused havoc in the middle of the road, it is almost a trend now in Silchar
