Silchar girl Debashree Sarkar is off to New Zealand to represent India in the Powerlifting Championship

India has always been in the running as a sports country when it comes to cricket. Well, it’s not the same anymore. India has made her place in other sports as well—boxing, wrestling, javelin, to name a few. The northeastern states have produced numerous talents in the world of sports and the athletes have made us proud every time. Although powerlifting has still not made it to the limelight, it is emerging to be one. In the powerlifting championship that is going to be held towards the end of this year in New Zealand, Assam’s Debashree Sarkar has made her place in the national team to represent India.

Debashree Sarkar hails from a middle-class family in Silchar. She started her journey of powerlifting five years ago in Silchar’s Vyam Vidyalaya and has been practicing in Guwahati for the last three years. She took part in the National Powerlifting Championship held in Telangana this year in July and performed brilliantly there. She secured a Bronze medal, which finally got her a ticket to the national team. Debashree Sarkar is a hard-working girl and her relentless struggle finally paid off when she earned her position on the Indian national team.

In the Powerlifting championship that is to be held on November 28, 2022, in Auckland, New Zealand, Debashree is going to play in the Junior women’s 52 Kg category. Almost a hundred powerlifters are going to take part in the championship from India but Debashree is the only one to secure her position in the team from Assam, which is undoubtedly one of the proudest moments for Silchar as well. Although the tremendous amount of talent she has, managing the finances seems to be the greatest hurdle in her path now.

As per the rules for the aforesaid championship, the participant has to bear the financial loads by themselves. The participant is to deposit 1.5 lakh to the Assam Powerlifting Association before the 11th of September, which then further will send the amount to the Indian Powerlifting Federation. Bilpar Punyapal road’s Debashree has already tossed this barrier and submitted the fees on 9th September. But this is not the end of it. She now needs another 1 to 1.5 lakh in order to take part in the championship. Silchar’s MLA, Dipayan Chakraborty has lent a helping hand and has given her 60 thousand rupees. Also, the District Sports Association as well as the Silchar Veteran Cricketers’ Club has helped her with some amount of money. Debashree herself has loaned 45,000 rupees. This powerlifter wants to fulfill her dream of playing for the nation and is doing her best to make this dream of hers turn into reality.
