Three militants detained with advanced weapons at Hmarkhawlien near Manipur border

Geographically, Cachar district is bordered by several neighbouring states such as Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram. Criminal activities like arms smuggling and drug trafficking by international cartels along these inter state borders have become commonplace nowadays as these routes also serve as a transit to other countries like Myanmar. On Monday, in a joint operation, Assam rifles and State Police arrested three militants along the Assam-Manipur border in the wee hours of the morning.

Jiribam 38 Assam Rifles and Cachar police arrested the three militants in a coordinated operation. According to police sources, three militants were arrested with weapons from Hmarkhawlien at ​​Lakhipur in a raid on late Sunday night. Several arms and objectionable materials were seized from them.

The three arrested were identified as Elizar Jote (40), John Hmar (39) and Darlene Hmar (35). Their identities were not fully disclosed by the police and security agencies as it is an ongoing investigation with inputs received from various sources. It is possible that more arrests may be made if their origin is traced.

An AK 47, an MA Assault, thirty five 5.56 mm ammunitions, 7.56 ammunitions and two magazines were confiscated from the three militants.

Recently, civilians were spotted brandishing weapons near the Assam-Mizoram border and now the arrest of three militants near the Manipur border with advanced weapons have further raised security concerns for Barak Valley people before the upcoming state elections. Government intelligence agencies are investigating the matter.
