"Time will speak" Rumi Nath confident despite Ranjit Dass' "Won't even get membership," statement

“Till I am the president, forget ticket to contest from BJP, Rumi Nath won’t even get a membership.” This is what Assam BJP president, Ranjit Dass said when he was asked about Rumi Nath’s future in BJP.

Rumi Nath is a former MLA from the Borkhola Legislative Assembly constituency. Much like her father, she started her political career with BJP. However, later she switched to join Congress and contested on Congress’ ticket in the last election to the assembly in 2016.

In 2006 she became the MLA from Borkhola for the first time after defeating Misbahul Islam Laskar who was contesting from Congress’ ticket. It was a revenge election for Rumi Nath as her father Trailaksya Bhusan Nath was defeated by Laskar in 2001. In 2011, she became the MLA from the same constituency for the second time. However, she contested and won on Congress’ ticket. Again Misbahul Islam Laskar who was contesting Independently was the runner up. In 2016, she tasted defeat, as the Congress votes got divided between Misbahul Laskar and Rumi Nath. BJP’s Kishore Nath emerged as the winner.

Rumi Nath has her eyes set on the next elections. She was expelled by Congress for alleged involvement in “anti-party activities.” Since then there is speculation that she will join BJP and contest from Borkhola. Ranjit Dass ruled it out.

When asked for a response to Dass’ statement, Rumi Nath said, “Time will speak.”

It is worth mentioning here is that the Assam BJP president’s comment has not come as a to her confidence. What Dass, Sonowal, Himanta and co. decide remains to be seen. But it is evident that Rumi Nath’s popularity is growing in the constituency and at the same time, Kishore Nath’s popularity is fading to oblivion.
