Two more explosions along Assam-Mizoram border; "Situation under control," Cachar SP

Tension mounting in Lailapur area of Dholai constituency. Assam Police has managed to push back the Mizo encroachment by at least 1.5 kilometers but they still remain 5 kilometers inside the territorial boundaries of Assam. Yesterday, one grenade was thrown, allegedly by the Mizo civilians to threaten the Assam Police contingent. Last night/today morning, at around 2:45 am, the forest officials reported two more explosions.

The Mizos have encroached and have now resorted to obstruction of government work. A road connecting Khulecherra with Dholakhal is under construction. This road has been commissioned by the government of Assam but the workers are unable to do their duties as the Mizos abuse, threaten them, This is why the Assam Police decided to intervene. A barrack has been formed and the road is being constructed.

Police sources confirmed two blasts last night. The superintendent of Police, Vaibhav Chandrakant Nimbalkar is at the border along with DC Cachar, ADGP Harmeet Singh, and other senior Police, administration and forest officials. “The situation currently is under control,” informed Nimbalkar.

Many locals have left their abode in fear of an attack from the Mizo miscreants. Locals said, last year they houses were set ablaze and the Upper Painom LP School was bombed. The school was established by the Government of Assam in 2009 and is in the official record books. Not only that, the school is operated by the Assam Government which also pays salaries to the teachers and other staff. However, last year, the officials in the Mizoram secretariat countered saying, “Just because the government of Assam built a school, it does not mean that the land belongs to them.”

Local residents of the Khulicherra area where the tension is mounting said, they are grateful to the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Government of Assam for taking decisive actions against the encroachment. “We will like to request the honorable Home Minister to conduct an NRC in Mizoram and they will realize how the illegal immigrants from Myanmar are actually behind all the ruckus,” said a local resident. Adding, “The road under construction is crucial as that would enable the forest officials to patrol the area. Mizos do anti-social activities in these zones and that is why they are resisting the construction of roads. The street will also help pupils reach school which has been bombed by the miscreants.”

At this stage, the Mizo guards continue to remain within Assam and the civilians are also on the border guarding the territory that they believe belongs to Mizoram.
