Two times Rajya Sabha MP,  Cachar Congress' Karnendu Bhattacharjee passes away at 84

Senior Congress Leader and ex-MP of the Rajya Sabha, Karnendu Bhattacharjee passed away this morning at 9:45 AM. The two times MP from Assam breathed his last at a hospital in the National Capital Region. At the time of his death, his age was 84 years and 7 months. This stalwart Congressman has served as the Cachar District President of the Congress for long 27 years. He was also the MLA of Silchar from 1985 to 1991.

He was admitted to a hospital in Noida for many days due to several ailments related to his old age. Today he breathed his last at the same hospital. He has left behind two daughters and his wife Nandini Bhattacharjee.

Born in 1938, Karnendu Bhattacharjee’s inception to political journey started with student politics as a Convener of the Chhatra Congress from 1957-61. Later he went on to hold different positions in the Congress Party in the Cachar District. In 1985 he became the MLA from Silchar legislative constituency and in 1996, he became the MP of the Rajya Sabha representing Assam. He was elected to this seat for two terms straight.

Karnendu Bhattacharjee was born on May 2, 1938 (Rajya Sabha Website Archive). Other than being active in politics, he has been a strong supporter of various social and welfare movements in Silchar, including the Red Cross Society, Silchar Byam Vidyalaya and the others. He was also a part of various committees as an MP of the Rajya Sabha, including the Committee on Railways, Committee on Urban and Rural Development, and Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence among others.

Politicians from other parties would also look up to his advice from time to time. He has never flinched from appreciating the positive works of the Bharatiya Janata Party when it came to power, especially when the Board Gauge line was introduced in Southern Assam during Modi Government’s tenure. His death is a huge dent for the Congress Party and the political atmosphere of Barak Valley.
